OKI C5450n Linux Gentoo
In generel this is a good printer and works great with Linux.
With a network interface (UTP) and PostScript Level 3, what can go wrong?
Toner Cartridge installation is troublesome
There is one thing for C5450n, C5450, C5250, C5510 and C5540
and that is the replacement of the toner cartridge.
It is not easy and you should carefully read the manual.
OKI do know this as there is a lot of signs, documentation and so on
regarding the change of the cartridge.
- The toner unit is in two parts
- The top part is called toner cartridge.
It contains the powder.
- The lower part is called image drum.
This is the green drum that you might have seen before.
- Both the toner cartridge and the image drum has limited
life time and should be replaced some day.
- The toner cartridge has a blue handle which is the lock.
- When the blue handle is placed in upwards position it is locked and the powder will not come out.
- When the blue handle is placed in down position it is open
and the powder will come out if not handled proberly.
- The toner cartridge which comes with the printer
has a blue handle which can be moved forward to open position,
but it can not be moved backward to fully upright position.
- When the blue handle is in this middle position, it is safe
to remove the toner cartridge from image drum.
- If any thing goes wrong. Don't blame me. Consult your manual
before handling the toner in this printer. My description could be
wrong and you will end up having powder all over.
As you might guess, I handled the toner cartridge
and the image drum wrong.
I had a really bad luck and had to buy a new
toner cartridge and a new image drum
and this is almost as expensive as buying four
new cartridges and four new image drums.
I have been working with printers and computers
more 20 years and this is worst printer I have
ever laid my hands on.
It is very difficult to replace the
toner cartridge so be carefull out there.
It is a nightmare.
